John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville, 7th Seigneur of Sark (; 22 April 1690 – 02 January 1763), commonly known by his earlier title Lord Carteret, was a British statesman and Lord President of the Council from 1751 to 1763; effectively leader of the country when Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington was Prime Minister.〔G.E. Cokayne; with Vicary Gibbs, H.A. Doubleday, Geoffrey H. White, Duncan Warrand and Lord Howard de Walden, editors. The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct or Dormant, new ed., 13 volumes in 14 (1910-1959; reprint in 6 volumes, Gloucester, U.K.: Alan Sutton Publishing, 2000), volume XII/1, page 153.〕
==Origins==
The family of Carteret was settled in the Channel Islands, and was of Norman descent. John was the son of George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret (1667–1695), by his marriage with Lady Grace Granville (3 September 1654 - 18 October 1744), daughter of John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath (29 August 1628 - August 1701).〔(Record for ''John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville'' on ''www.thepeerage.com'' )〕 On his mother's side of the family he was a descendant of the Elizabethan admiral Sir Richard Grenville, famous for his death in the ''Revenge'' at the Battle of Flores.
John was Seigneur of Sark from 1715 to 1720 when he sold the fief. He held (in absentia) the office of Bailiff of Jersey from 1715.
